Are we inside a Sarlacc?
The other day my friend Nathan told me about what a Sarlacc is. I’ve never really been into Star Wars but this specific thing stuck with me. The idea is that a Sarlacc is this creature that lives in the desert that looks like a big hole with teeth. If you find yourself inside, you are slowly digested over a thousand years.
C-3PO: “In its belly, you will find a new definition of pain and suffering, as you are slowly digested over a thousand years.”
If we ignore the obvious questions about how you survive past a few days without food or water, the thing that is stuck in my head is how unsettling the entire metaphor is. I immediately think about the universe and life itself. We are born into this slowly expanding (or is it shrinking?) pit and then are slowly digested over about a hundred years. A lucky few get to enjoy the ride, but overall it’s pain and suffering.
The universe is a Sarlacc.

i’m calling it ‘wil wheatcon’ until i can think of something better
In an average year, I travel to around 5 or 6 cities for conventions. Almost every time I announce an appearance, the most common response is some version of “that’s great! When are you coming to [my town]?” I’m not coming to your town, but I am coming to...

I find the trend of people posting about the way they use generative AI to be fascinating at an anthropological level. I do not remember the last time a piece of technology pushed so many different people into writing about the way they use it, or not use...
