Out of all the cities I have been too, Taipei feels like its straight out of cities skylines. Especially when it comes to the diversity of transit options (including a gondola!). Taking a video from the Wenhu line from the foamer seat feels exactly like first person transit view in Cities Skylines 1.

Alex Pretti was executed in Minneapolis this morning. Abolishing ICE is the bare minimum that we can do. We need to hold the individual agents and all of their leadership accountable. No government agency can ever have this much power to blatantly disregard the Constitution.

“The Reverse-Centaur’s Guide to Criticizing AI” by Cory Doctorow. https://pluralistic.net/2025/12/05/pop-that-bubble/

Another banger from Doctorow. I love reading Pluralistic because of all these great ideas, but on the other hand it makes it harder to enjoy his books since a lot of those ideas are then packaged up for I assume non-pluralistic readers.

Either way, great speech here, wish I could have seen it in person!

“No Phones in the Ten-Don Shop” by Craig Mod is a wonderful essay about the magical little food shops in Japan. I did not go to this place but went to a few like it in Tokyo a few weeks ago and I am still thinking about them. Also reminded that I have not written a single word about that trip and I should fix that soon before the words all fly away.

The great bundling and unbundling cycle continues. Now that each streaming service is approaching 20 bucks a pop, it’s only a matter of time before a benevolant bundler comes along and allows us to subscribe to all the services for a discount. That discount will then increase every year until we are back to where we started with cable and the great cycle will renew.

queue lion king intro music

Also found that when it came to doing simple medical procedures the support staff like nurses and medics were usually much better than the doctors since they likely saw all the ways a given producdure could go wrong.

Before AI generated blog posts took over we had a bunch of bad writing that overused buzz words and cliches (https://levlaz.org/forbidden-words/). When I would come across one of those in a piece of writing my brain would just turn off.

I’ve been having a similar reaction whenever I see an emdash these days. Brain just turns off and I stop reading.

Yeah I know an emdash is real thing that has its place in grammar, but AI ruined it for everyone.

It’ll get attention and work exaclty one time.

On the other hand, I am worried that we’re about to have a deluge of random crap sent to physical offices in an attempt to capture this exciting new channel.

I am still puzzled on why anyone would leave this mat on their front door advertizing some other companies product to anyone who happens to walk by. But it does remind me of some diners on the east coast that sold ads on their placemats. Nothing screams tasteful design like an add for Big Bobs Oil Change in a nonmatching font.

In fact, we as engineers are quite willing to subject each others to completely inadequate tooling, bad or missing documentation and ridiculous API footguns all the time.

Today I am once again reminded that the hardest part of shipping software is testing. I got my thing to work in a few minutes and then spent hours fiddling with jest, typescript, etc. I still can’t get jest to work because I don’t care to understand the difference between ESM and BDSM or whatever else. Just wrote some vanilla tests using emojis for pass and fail. ✅/❌

Things are finally working but the great feeling of joy from getting something to work was beaten out of me by JS. You win again.

Superblocks brought the cringe to LinkedIn today by having everyone change their job title to ($existing_job_title + | AI software builder) but did it in a way where it notified everyone that someone started a new job.

Mike Dodds’ post about selling format methods applies to selling any technical product.

We’ve been working hard the last few months to introduce the llm primitive as a new type in #dagger. You now get an SDK, sandboxed execution envirnment, and observability layer to build your ai agent. This makes dagger a perfect place to experiment with building your own agents.

It’s been so cool to see what people have built with it so far and I can’t wait to see what you are able to do. https://dagger.io/blog/llm

But I am especially excited to learn that they are working on moving from WML to hugo. I’ve tried to fix a few small bugs in WML over the years and its always been incredibly painful.

A few weeks ago my favorite local Coffee Shop (St. Frank on Folsom) remembered my order when I walked in and I was on top of the world becuase its hard to become a “local” in downtown SF.

Today they gave me a free cappucino. Our relationship is escalating and I’m madly in love. 🥰
